1.Fastest train in India is the New
Delhi-Bhopal Shatabdi Express.This fully air-conditioned superfast train has a maximum speed of 150km/h on the Faridabad-Agra section. It covers a pretty long distance of 704 km New Delhi to Bhopal in 7 hours 50 minutes.
2. Slowest train in India is the Metupalayam Ooty Nilgiri Passenger which runs at a minimum speed of 10kmph, approx. 15 times slower than fastest running train. The reason behind this low speed is that this train runs in hilly regions so bounded by speed limitations for safety issues.
3. Longest run by a train is noted by Vivek Express from Dibrugarh to
Kanyakumari. It travels a distance of 4273 km, achieving the tag of longest run in terms of total time as well as distance in Indian Railways.
4. Shortest run by a train:
This is for the railway members occurs between Nagpur and Ajni stations which are situated just 3km away from each other.
5. Longest non-stop distance/travel:
Trivandrum – H. Nizamuddin
Rajdhani Express which travels the distance of 528km continuously between Vadodara and Kota nonstop followed by Mumbai Rajdhani Express that travels nonstop between New Delhi and Kota.
6. Longest station name is registered as Venkatanarasimharajuvaripeta on the Arakkonam-Renigunta section near Chennai.
7. Shortest station name registered as Ib, near Jharsuguda in Odisha and other one is Od, near Anand in Gujarat.
8. Trains with most stops: The
record for maximum number of
stops by an Express/Mail train is
held by Howrah – Amritsar Express which have115 halts in its route followed by Delhi – Howrah Janata Express and Jammu Tawi – Sealdah Express having 109 halts & 99 halts in their routes respectively.
9. Least punctual train: is considered the Guwahati Trivandrum Express. It is the most unpunctual long-distance train in the country. The charted journey time is 65 hours and 5 minutes, but the average delay on a trip is about 10-12 hours.
10. Two stations at same location:
Srirampur and Belapur are two
different stations which are
both at the same location on the
railway route but on opposite sides
of the track located in Ahmednagar
district of Maharashtra.
11. Most powerful locomotive is the Electric locomotive WAG-9 used for hauling heavy freight rakes is the most powerful locomotive in Indian Railways.It is capable of hauling 24 coach trains.
12. Last stations in North-South-
East-West direction: Northernmost
railway station is Baramulla in
Jammu and Kashmir. Westernmost
is Naliya near Bhuj in Gujarat.

platform in the world at Kharagpur
(West Bengal) with a length of
2,733 ft (1072.5 m) in length.
17. Oldest Working Locomotive:
The Fairy Queen is the oldest working locomotive which was made way back in 1855. It is the oldest functioning steam engine in
the world, which finds a place in
the Guinness Book of World
Records and got Heritage Award at
the International Tourist Bureau,
Berlin in March 2000. Its still in service.
18. First Railroad: The first railroad
was constructed by two Indians
(Jamsetjee Jeejeebhoy and Jaganath
Shunkerseth) and not the British.
19. Labor Force: Indian railway ranks ninth largest
commercial or utility employer in world, having over 1.4 million employees. It is also the India’s largest employer.

India is not the no. in terms of length of rail tracks .India ranks fourth with approx. 64,000 km of railroad after US, Russia, and China
21. Avoiding Steam Locomotives:
India stopped manufacture of steam locomotives in 1972 due to lower power and speed.
22.Total Distance Covered: The total distance covered by the all 14,300 trains daily on the Indian Railways tracks is equivalent to three & half times the distance to moon.
23.Toilets on trains were
first provided in 1891 in 1st
class and in 1907 in second class chambers.
